Day 8, Leg 6

Naver changed things up and said I walked only 39K today, not 40K, so make of that what you will. I'm tired and achy and not in any position to write at length, so I'll merely put up the two technical images plus ten images from the walk. I'll then shower and sleep and write my commentary in the morning.

The damage to my foot initially seemed about the same, but the bleeding isn't stopping without pressure. I'm here at the Hong-C Motel for tonight and tomorrow. I'll have to make a decision between now and checkout time on Friday: if I'm going to walk and spend almost two weeks worrying about bleeding into every bed I sleep in, that means there's a practical problem that's gotten beyond my control, and it may be better just to stop. I've washed and aggressively re-dressed my foot, and for tonight, I've wrapped the foot in a plastic bag and will stay off it for most of tomorrow (except when I do lunch plus an errand or two to the pharmacy and to the convenience store; the Hong-C is located on a steep hill requiring a lot of up-and-down work).

Righto—images, shower, bed. Plus a command decision either tomorrow or Friday morning. There's an intercity bus terminal down the street from where I am, so going back to Seoul at a moment's notice should be no problem.

Naver now says 39K, not 40K.

About 6200 calories burned. My record for a 60K "crazy walk" is over 90K steps.

living the wrapper's lifestyle

Yes, I realize that not letting the foot breathe can present its own problems ranging from sweat/moisture to infection. This is only to prevent myself from possibly bleeding all over my bedsheets. (I'll be applying pressure, too, but know that both of my feet are screaming right now, so this isn't the most desirable course of action.) I might end up cutting a hole in the bag's top to help aerate things.

  1. Damn, I'm equally impressed with the 40K +/- walk and depressed with the foot issues. Any chance you could pop into a clinic today and get a doctor's opinion on the bleeding issue?

As for the photos, this is the best batch of the hike so far, IMO. Top three: that ominous-looking bridge shot at the start, "dawn's early light," and the boardwalk view. After much internal consideration, I select the dawn as my favorite of the day.

Good luck on the rest day, and happy eating!

  2. There's actually a full-on hospital right next to the motel where I'm at. But even though Koreans will visit hospitals for small reasons like headaches, I'm still American enough not to visit a hospital unless, well, unless I'm having a heart attack or something equally severe is happening.
